Confront.

I talk to heaps of angry people, people who are blindly angry because of the things they do not know and don’t want to understand. There are so many people who would rather stay in perpetual annoyance and misunderstanding than invest a little time to learn something new. I spend plenty of time helping people recognize change and do my best to help them learn the changes and adapt.

This is often met with pushback from the people I am attempting to educate. I often find myself confronting these people with the fact that life and technology are changing and will continue to change. People dislike this a lot, they dislike change because it is unknown and nobody is comfortable going into the unknown. It scares us more than we would like to admit and we allow ourselves to change little by little so we can adapt easier to the change.

I hate confronting people and I have a strong dislike for change. Yet, I know that change is a constant and I try my best to roll forward with the change. Often when I confront people for being stubborn about the change I meet a wall, a wall that has stood in the same place for a number of years and has no plan of moving in the coming years. This wall is called the comfort zone, we love our comfort zones. However, with most walls, there is a gate that allows things in and out. This can be said about our comfort zones, we gradually open up and allow new things in to change who we are and let the old ways fall out.

Accepting the changes that are happening around us is a true challenge. Acknowledging these changes takes time to digest and become accustomed to, allowing ourselves to be willing to educate ourselves on the change will help us to welcome change better. I’d recommend we all think about how we accept change and how we adapt then confront our weaknesses and strive to open our comfort zone to new things.

Time.

Daily we decide where to invest our time. Perhaps you spend many hours at work, a few hours at the gym, a bit with friends, working on hobbies, or some time alone. Each of us has a day that is broken up between twenty-four hours, between the hours of sunshine and darkness. We choose where to put ourselves during these hours and who we will invest our time with and the activities we pursue.

Many of us are required to work to cover our day to day expenses or the cost of living. The hours we spend at work are what we choose to make of them, you might have a job that some look down at but it might be the right fit for you. Each of us can be happy at what we do each day, even if it isn’t our life passion we can still show up with a good attitude and a willingness to accomplish our tasks. This makes our hours spent working less of a drag on our personal lives, and us less of a negative well for others to feed off in their own struggles with life. Recognize that a good attitude will bring about better opportunities and better days.

Time spent with other people can make or break our days. We have routines that are built around the lives of others, we might look forward to seeing someone at work, after work, when we get home, or tomorrow at 11 am sharp for brunch. These plans with others can increase our overall life satisfaction and help us to find a better way of living. Lives are better when we have others to support and those who can support us. Friendships allow for happiness, sadness, misunderstandings, and collaborations. Life with others can test us, break us, and build us into better folk who can be better friends when the occasion arises.

Wherever you should decide to spend your time do so wisely. Invest in real opportunities building better experiences for yourself and others. Find yourself being the best friend you can be to others but most of all be a friend to yourself.

Variety.

Ever wondered what makes life so good? It’s variety, opportunity to experience the unique differences we each bring to the table. Think about it, can you imagine eating nothing but mac n cheese for every meal, every day for an entire lifetime? Or even eat the same meat and potato meal always? That would become redundant in a short time, and eating would be a dread instead of a delight. Variety enhances life, think about the foods we eat, the clothes we wear, and the people we met, things change and vary anywhere you go.

Let’s think about food(I love food, this is why we’re starting here.), eating should be an experience more often than not. Food is colors, textures and flavors all combined into an experience that can be enjoyed aloe or shared among friends. When the world began trading they opened up new food combinations which have shaped cuisine, the way we grow food, the way we prepare food, the flavors we add to food, and the way we eat food. Food allows us to change up our routine and escape much of the mundane to do’s we live daily.

The clothes we choose to wear share a nonverbal message to those we pass on the street we enjoy band X, we support political candidate Y, or enjoy brand Z. Our clothes speak without words and are often others first impressions of us. I know, we’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover nor a person by their clothes, but who doesn’t from time to time make assumptions about someone wearing a certain type of clothing. Clothing varies from person to person, country to country and culture to culture. How cool is that?

It’s not hard to see how people vary around the world, how different we can be due to the influences around us. If you live in a colder climate you are often involved in winter activities that a person living next to a beach in a warm climate who rarely wears pants. Where we live changes us and shapes us different ways. When you travel you experience these differences and may find yourself interested in adopting some of them into your daily routine. These difference create experiences that you will never forget, whether it’s eating guinea pig in Peru, Balut in the Philippines, Chicken and waffles in the USA, or Blood Pudding in the UK. Yes, another set of food references.

Our differences allow for a bit of mystery that calls us to adventure and exploration. Experiencing new things connects us, helping us see more, know more, an become better citizens of the world. Variety makes life better and makes for a better world.

Speak.

When you were learning to speak you began one word at a time, perhaps saying Mom, Dad, Dog, Cat, Cookie, or some other word relating to things you cared about most at that time. Your vocabulary grew and you learned how combining words helped you to get what you wanted and needed little by little. We eventually learned how to express happiness, sadness, hunger, love and everything else needed to communicate with others. We knew how /what we felt and were able to share it with anyone around who would listen. As we’ve grown the ability to express ourselves fades a little, we begin to hold more back and internalize our thoughts.

This internalization leads us to share less of us when we are hurt, sad, or confused because we wouldn’t want to appear weak, depressed, or stupid around others. We stop talking about things that need to be shared and start filing those thoughts away weighing down our self-worth and esteem. Often many begin to question the value they bring to the table and find themselves without a place they feel comfortable being themselves. When people fail to see their unique traits as an asset and start seeing themselves as deadweight in any situation this leads a person down a path too may tread to depression and worse.

Many of us live in a culture where depression is frowned upon, mental health isn’t addressed, and visiting a mental health professional is a silent affair. We know that there are two outcomes that can happen when we finally dare to bring up our struggles: Willing ears to listen and reassurance there are better days ahead and a willingness to listen and help in the future when needed but that seeking advice from a mental health professional is a good avenue to pursue as well. The adverse is often a pair of ears that heard but a response that might involve lacing up one’s boots and jumping back into the saddle and not worrying about it so much.

I am an advocate for individual resilience and being able to work through challenges to gain better footing for future struggles. I am however an even bigger advocate for speaking up when it is needed because there are some demons that are too tough for us to battle on our own. Asking for help when you are at the water’s edge is nothing to be ashamed of nor worried about. Please be brave and speak up when you need help, please use your words to share your needs and how you are feeling. We will be better off understanding the true strength and resilience it takes to speak up and say what we need to receive the help that will make for better days ahead.

Weak.

I recently started climbing again after just over a year of not climbing, re-entering my local climbing gym I figured that I could pick back up where I left off. Thinking that my fitness was fairly decent and my ability was still there I proceeded to flail around for an hour on routes that I easily climbed just a year before, my hand hurt, my shoulder ached, and my muscles all begged me to give them a rest. I continued to walk around the gym looking for routes to send, I ended up sending less than half of my attempted routes but still felt accomplished to be back in the gym climbing even if I was weaker than I thought I was.

After finishing my workout in the gym I drove home a little down about my climbing I thought about how nice it was to be going again. The thought of the different routes and moves needed to send(climb) them allowed me to recognize that today I was a weak climber, but next session I would be stronger and be able to send more routes.  This is how we get better at the things we enjoy, we keep showing up to learn more, get better, and be stronger as we participate in our passion.

It’s a hard thing to admit weakness because once we admit that we are others will capitalize on that weakness and try and bring us down. Not a great thought when you are thinking about being vulnerable, can people use my truth against me? Sadly this is a reality, there are people who want to bring us down either to their level or below. Understanding this as a possibility as we go is an opportunity for each of us to become stronger by accepting what we can’t change and investing our time into strengthening the things we can change.

Whatever your weakness is accept it then move forward and fortify and strengthen what you can and become the best you can be. I may not be the strongest climber on the wall, but I will send any route I put my mind to, working from bottom to top relentlessly until I reach my desired destination at the top of the route.

Goal.

Once you set a goal what is your actual endgame? Are you willing to put in the work to see it from inception to fruition? Can you visualize yourself along the journey working through the ups and downs, are you prepared to fall, then rise again to the next wave of challenges ahead? It’s easy to set a goal, the hard part is the steps in between where you have to stick to it and work for your desired outcome.

Tonight we watched “Free Solo” a visual tale of Alex Honold as he prepares to free solo the freerider route on El Capitan. Watching Alex interact with his friends and family as he worked toward his goal was very interesting due to the fact that he remained vocal about his desired outcome and the risk that accompanied his lofty goal. Throughout the film, you watch as he experiences injury, personal preparation both mental and physical, doubt, and finally the completion of his goal. The way the film is shown allows the viewer to experience the actual scale of the challenge and find themselves sweaty-palmed and ready for the next movement on the journey.

As we decide on what challenge we want to accept we need to recognize the challenges there will be. The road will be ready for our feet, but will our feet be ready for the different objects along the way? Personally, the best way I’ve found if I am ready or not is by doing the thing I want to do. If I want to be able to run a 10k I need to start running a few times a week at various distances, recording my time, preparing my mind and body for each step along the way and acknowledging that there will be good days but there will also be bad days. Days where I do not want to run, I can choose on those days if I am going to walk my needed distance, a combination of walking and running, pushing through the pain of the run on that day, or just avoid it altogether.

At the end of the day, week, year, or years how you decide to start and complete your goals are entirely up to you. You can allow these goals to stand at the front of your priority list or have them as passive companions to other worthy pursuits. Either way, you decide how to set out and complete your goal. The key is to set small manageable goals as you start out, then after you get better at achieving your goals set larger loftier goals that stretch you a bit more than your previous accomplishments did. Don’t limit your opportunities because you fear failure, embrace failure to allow for more opportunities to see your goals from dreams to destinations.
